ARC-Sins of the Son
(Grigori Legacy #2)
releases March 27
When homicide detective Alexandra Jarvis sees a photo of Seth Benjamin on a police bulletin, she knows that Heaven's plan to halt Armageddon has gone terribly wrong. As the only mortal who knows of Seth's true nature, only she can save him. Aramael was a hunter of Fallen Angels until a traitor forced him into earthly exile. Now, with no powers and only a faint memory of Alex, his mortal soulmate, he will stop at nothing to redeem himself-even if it means destroying Seth in the name of the Creator…
Linda has outdone herself with this one. I was impressed with the world and characters she created in book one, but she has taken both to a new level in this next installment. I was absolutely stunned. She has achieved what all authors want, to put emotions into words. Her characters become so real you feel every heartache, sacrifice and betrayal and have a hard time tearing yourself away from their world.
“Mika’el gritted his teeth and closed his eyes, bracing himself to step fully back into the role he had forsaken almost 5 thousand years before, a role he had never thought to fill again. The weight of the One’s disclosures pressed on him with the force of a collapsing star.”
This book picks up right where the last one left off and I would suggest reading Sins of the Angels first so you can appreciate the full emotional impact of the decisions the characters have to make. I really can’t go into too much detail about the plot because it would spoil the hell out of the story. Alex is thrown back into the inevitable war between Heaven and Hell when Seth shows up with his memory completely wiped. I was particularly moved by the story of the One and Lucifer. We get a glimpse into what happened thousands of years ago when she had to cast Lucifer and his followers out of Heaven and what that decision cost her. Yes, I had sympathy for the devil, but this scene made me realize just how far he has fallen.
Done at last, Lucifer crouched at his aide’s side. He rolled what remained of Samael’s head toward him. Blood seeped from the Archangel’s eyes, mingling with tears. Shaking his head, Lucifer wiped away the crimson trickles. “I’m sorry it came to this, Sameal, truly. But I need to be sure you’ve learned your lesson.”…[Lucifer takes Sameal’s immortality in his hands and threatens to destroy it]… Rising to his feet, he dropped Samael’s immortality onto the floor. It rolled to a stop by his aide’s mutilated fingers. “I’m going out,” Lucifer said. “When you’re done putting yourself together, make sure you clean up this mess. And get me more peppermints. You’ve ruined mine.”
There is no physical romance in this story, but the tension between Alex, her soul mate Aramael and Seth was as powerful as any PNR. There are many characters and events that create suspense as we watch them come together into a head-on collision. At the end we know Lucifer has information that will have devastating consequences for Alex. Will Aramael be able to stand by his decision? And now that the war between heaven and hell has begun what will happen to the mortal world?
This not your typical angel story. The series is a must read for any dark Urban Fantasy reader.
