Sheep Book Review: Personal Demon by Susan Sizemore

Personal Demon, by Susan Sizemore, is the sixth installment in the Law of Blood series. I find myself at a crossroads with this one: nothing spectacular happens yet at the same time nothing all that awful. It's middle of the road for me.

Plot:
As one of Chicago’s vampire hunters, Ivy Bailey is responsible for keeping the city’s human residents safe—a job that becomes infinitely harder when someone starts committing gruesome acts of magical murder. But what Ivy doesn’t realize is that she is a hunter being hunted…

Vampire Enforcer Christopher Bell is in Chicago to investigate rumors of a revolution, but when he comes across Ivy being followed through dark streets, what he finds is a ghost from his past. Over a century ago, Christopher fought the vicious London serial killer Jack the Ripper—and won. But now, the Ripper’s tainted soul is back—on the hunt once more.

Ivy insists she doesn’t need protection—especially from a vampire Enforcer. But soon, Christopher finds himself in the middle of a fight between demons and mortals, watching over the frustrating woman who has managed to stir his undead heart….

This was my first time reading anything by this author and was unaware at what point in the saga I was jumping in. I figured out pretty quickly there must be a whole load of back story soon after the first couple chapters.

The plot itself was all over the place, it felt very inconsistent and disjointed and pieces of the story direction were missing or simply brushed over very quickly. Witches, both good and bad, are law enforcers of some kind to the vampires in Chicago, and the vampires are out breaking laws by killing humans that are not marked for death in some way. Unfortunately this didn't mesh well with the rest of the story. I was not clear as to the reasons why the witches, who are pretty much enemies to the majority vampire community, are out patrolling the vampire community. Don't the vamps have their own people for this? And as a matter of fact yes they do have vampires that police their own. So why are the witches poking around? I was rather confused.

The story between our lead couple, Ivy and Christopher, was annoyingly dull and at times bothersome. The big bad vampire is draggin' Ivy all around the city, locking her away, chaining her up, talking down to her constantly, Christopher's intimidating and arrogant yet I'm supposed to believe somehow these two are going to fall in love? Not really. When a man drags a gal across town to interrogate her and then tells the female he's going to keep her as a pet...that's pretty much when you pull out your stake and end the dude! (Unless this is Fifty Shades of Grey. *ba dump tish!*)You don't then hop in the sack and start to fall in love. Not if you're sane anyway.

A large portion of time is focused on dreamscaping and the significance that it represents for a couple. Then that's just brushed over by our main pair. Next we have villain killers who are possessed by demons and are out killing innocent people around town. One killer is supposed to be possessed by the spirit of Jack the Ripper but that bit is so grossly washed out that it too was hard to get invested in. The main thing here is too many points are glazed over. The author split focus one too many times leaving the reader confused and frustrated.

The potential was there but it all fell apart.

  1. I felt exactly the same about this latest book. I am a fan of the series as a whole but something was missing this time around. Great review. First time at your site and I love what I see.

  2. I accidentally bought this book, not knowing at the time it belonged to this series. A series I never got into. I do love her other books though, especially her vampire primes, so I do hope you give that a try.

  3. It so hard when this happens in a series that you have followed for a while. I have seen it with several series I absolutely love. I have not read this one and think I will go look it up. Thank you for sharing with us :)
