The paranormal war that engulfed New Orleans seven years ago is over. But the battle for the city is just beginning . . .

Claire Connolly is a Sensitive, infected with magic when the Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell. Magic can easily consume and destroy a Sensitive, and if Claire’s secret is discovered she’ll be locked into the walled district of Devil’s Isle along with every other Paranormal left in the city.

Bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered Claire’s secret, but refused to turn her in. Together they saved New Orleans from the resurgence of magic that nearly destroyed it. But now a dangerous cult is on the rise, and it will take both Claire and Liam—and magical allies within Devil’s Isle’s towering walls—to defeat the occult threat before magic corrupts them both...

Initially undecided about the storyline I continued to persevere and was really glad I did. Not reading the first novel in this series, I thought I might be a little lost but Ms. Neil brought all the characters to life and I felt right at home. Of course I LOVE New Orleans. It makes a great backdrop for the urban fantasy/paranormal realm as anyone who has ever visited could attest.

Claire, a newly "magical" sensitive who works as a resident store owner is moonlighting as a bounty hunter for "wraiths" (a human infected by magic of which she is one!) HMMM...see any conflict of interest there? Well, she makes it work with a little help from her friends, humans and paras alike. But she struggles trying to keep her passion for Liam, her partner and mentor bounty hunter, in check. Learning to keep her magic in check, being on the lookout for wraiths, trying to keep her store afloat after the war with paranormals a few years ago and trying to stop a cultish "terrorist" group makes you wonder how Claire is able to get up everyday. Yikes! Give me plenty of beignets and strong coffee.

I really liked the characters and Claire was a great main. Sensible, loyal, independent character who you can't help but like. Smart comebacks and realistic thought processes keep you in the moment.

I enjoyed the story immensely. You could jump right in with this book and not feel like you were missing anything. But...SPOILER ALERT...(not really)...if you think Claire had to exert some self control with her magic and obsession with Liam, just wait until you get to the end of this read! You just may want to throw yourself around in a hissy fit demanding the next episode!
