Jane Yellowrock (Faith Hunter) visits I Smell Sheep + giveaway

{Katie and Sharon are silently quaking under the bed, whispering}
Katie: Who the hell invited the Beast to guest post!? Is this some kind of April Fool's Day joke?"
Sharon: I might have, sort of, kind of...
Katie: WHY!?
Sharon: I invited Faith Hunter and her character Jane Yellowrock. No one said anything about a sheep eating beast. The 6th book in the Jane Yellowrock series, Blood Trade, comes out tomorrow and I thought-
*Katie bops Sharon on the head*
Sharon: OW!
{Sharon and Katie freeze}

After a NAP
(See Jane Run)
Sheep. I smell sheep. Beast lifted nose into the air and sniffed slowly, then quickly. Hacked. Opened mouth. Drew air in over tongue and roof of mouth. Flehmen behavior, word learned from Jane. Smell sheep. Easy prey. Unless big dog is near.

Beast rose from heated rock in sun and padded to ground, drawing air deep. Sheep only. No stupid dog smell. Easy prey. Hunched shoulders up and dropped head down. Pawpawpaw along rabbit path through forest. Past den. Good place to have kits, deep cave in rocks, narrow entrance. But big enough to pull sheep/prey/food.

No, Beast! Jane woke from sleep and thought fast. These are special sheep. Sheep that might cast a spell on you, like a net and haul you up into the trees to dangle like a pendulum.

Beast paused. What is pen-du-lum? Is it good to eat? Does it have hot blood and much meat like sheep?

No. It’s— Never mind. Leave the sheep alone.

Want sheep. Want to eat sheep. Lifted lips to show killing teeth.
These are people, not sheep. And you can’t eat people.

People who smell like sheep? Jane is stupid.

No. I’m not stupid. It’s a blog that smells like sheep, written by people who smell like people. Probably.

Jane is stupid kit. People smell like ugly man-smells. Purrr-fumes, and soap and breath of car—exhaust. Sheep smell like sheep. Sheep smell like food and dinner.

It’s a blog. And we are supposed to be guests here, but if you eat the bloggers that will spoil everything.

All meat spoils. Must eat fast to keep meat fresh.

That’s not what I meant. Besides the people don’t smell like sheep. They smell sheep. (Jane made quotation marks in air.)

Jane is confusing. Why are fingers in air like hooking claws? Jane wants Beast to eat bloggers-who-smell-sheep slow? To use claws like hooks to hunt and hurt bloggers?

Jane grabbed her braids and yanked. Arrrrg!

Beast chuffed with laughter and lay down in path. April Fools Day, Jane.

From the writer, Faith Hunter: For more Jane and Beast, Blood Trade will be out April 2, from Penguin/ROC. Like, tomorrow, Y’all!

Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker you don’t want to cross—especially if you’re one of the undead…

The Master of Natchez, Mississippi has a nasty problem on his hands. Rogue vampires—those who follow the Naturaleza and believe that humans should be nothing more than prey to be hunted—are terrorizing his city. Luckily, he knows the perfect skinwalker to call in to take back the streets.

But what he doesn’t tell Jane is that there’s something different about these vamps. Something that makes them harder to kill—even for a pro like Jane. Now, her simple job has turned into a fight to stay alive…and to protect the desperately ill child left in her care.

  4. My inner beast would be a bear. I don't think grizzly because eh, not big on salmon and probably not polar since I don't have any cravings for fat, *blergh*. But the Spectacled Bear I must admit, sounds about right.

Love the Jane Yellowrock series. I actually discovered it when I read the untold story of Joanne Walker meeting Jane Yellowrock. I am such a fan girl of C.E. Murphy's Walker Papers series that I have read everything I can get my hands. And that particular story introduced me to Jane & Beast. Loved it!

  9. What a great interview! Love your sense of humor. The Skinwalker series seems exciting and will definitely be added to my TBR list.
If I had an inner beast it would probably be a colorful, fire-breathing dragon.

    1. Dani, you could an Asian Eagle owl. (Bubo bubo is the scientific name, I think.) I saw one once. It has the wisdom of an owl with the pure predator of eagle! Beautiful! (Jane turned into one once.)

  12. I have an inner beast. It's a dog. I'd like it to be something sexy like a big cat, but I'm afraid it's a basset hound. And how weird is that?

  13. The Jane Yellowrock series of which skinwalker is the first book is the best ever. Waiting for Blood Tradethe next book which comes out april 2 is so nerve racking. Can't wait!

  19. Mine would be a Snow Leopard. I'm cold weather people.
Beast, bloggers don't taste good, so don't eat bloggers. Faith should buy you a whole sheep, and let you eat it for being so good about not eating the bloggers. Also, this is as good as being on a book cover. Lots of people get to admire you and praise your excellent hunting skills and considerable restraint at not eating bloggers.

  21. Some kind of slutty cat, LOL! A clouded leopard. I hunt, and the places I choose are small and tight, places that an ambush predator would pick.

  22. I love this series! I can't wait for tomorrow to come, so i can get the new book. If I had an inner beast, I would love it to be a big cat. :-)

    1. Ana, you are brave. I frankly wouldn't like to have to hunt. If *really really really* had to be a beast, I'd be an alpha, long-haired, house cat. One of the snooty ones that everyone loves but who sticks her nose in the air for anything less than filet mignon. LOL

  29. I loved this post!!! :) And I adore the Jane Yellowrock series. Congrats on this newest release! My inner beast would be something rarely seen because I am a shy individual, but yet fearless if cornered. I am thinking maybe a Tazmanian Tiger. They might be thought extinct in the wild but who says that shifters of that type aren't still around?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love ALL of Faith's books and pre-ordered Blood Trade. I especially love Beast's character. She seems so real. I wish I had my own Beast! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think my beast is some type of big cat, because I like my solitude and definitely am not the pack type. I tend to be rather aggressive and I love water, so I am thinking more along the lines of a tiger. :)

  32. What a fun "interview"! I'm gonna take a minute to fangrrl :) Love, love, love this series. Didn't enter b/c my copy is in the mail being flung by the Amazon fairies of book goodness ;) Can't wait to get caught up in the next adventure. And like someone else mentioned, I *luvd* Easy Pickings. Thanks so much for the fun cross story and I'm crossing my fingers for more?!?! I want a beast too! But... I think she'd over power me and I'd never get back out! lol...

  33. I think my inner beast would be a black panther. Jane's Beast seems pretty cool, so I'd go with something similar, only black.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Loved this interview!!

I'm sure my inner beast would be some form of big cat. Sleep in the day, scent mark, rub up against things & groom... laying on a big branch, watching all the things I might decide to land on... Yeah, big cat for sure!!

  41. LOL! Love it when Beast's sense of humor bubbles up. My inner beast is a phoenix. Got to keep rising from the ashes, or so I tell myself. Lately I seem to be covered in soot. :)

  42. It would be a fluffy bear-- that could cuddle and make nurturing noises until annoyed, then it would have a house rattling roar. BAHAHAHAHHA

  43. A red panda...cuddly looking and playful and adorable, but with very sharp teeth and claws. :D

I am actually related to Mouse, who has attached himself to Harry Dresden, and hope someday to meet my big brother :)
