When a brutal attack leaves her barely conscious, Kalli thinks that the young man carrying her away is an angel sent to ferry her to Heaven. After all of the abuse and months of homelessness, Kalli welcomes the relief that Heaven would bring. Handsome Ellis, though, turns out to be just as mortal as she is. A kind stranger, Ellis saves her life by taking her to a local clinic to be healed. Once better, Kalli finds herself staying with her unusual rescuer while being monitored constantly by his mysterious family. It s not an ideal situation, but it beats the streets. Now that she s safe and warm and appears to have found someone who cares for her, Kalli assumes the worst is behind her. She couldn t be more wrong. Broken Worlds was the very first Young Adult Winner in the Yummy but Brainy Writing Contest presented by CBAY Books.

Broken Worlds is an intriguing tale that keeps you guessing about what exactly is going on to the very end. It opens with Kalli being brutally attacked in a dark alley and rescued by a beautiful young man she at first believes is an angel. It is difficult to say much more about the storyline without spoilers, so I will leave it with this, it is a story of betrayal, tears, sacrifice, and love.

It was very well written and kept me turning the pages to find out exactly what was going on and how it would end. I really enjoyed Kalli's character, even though I found her somewhat naive at times and her actions a bit unbelievable in her willingness to allow the wool to be pulled over her eyes; however, her young age and very human desire to be loved and wanted can excuse a lot of her naiveté. She does have strength of character and is willing to stand up when it counts and take action when the situation gets critical.

Overall I felt this was a good story and would definitely recommend it to the older YA reader and those young at heart with a taste for a little something of a surprise. I received this book via NetGalley.

About the Author:
I literally turned a nightmare into a dream on June 16th, 2013 when I received an email from CBAY Books that I’d won their publishing contest!

This unbelievable journey began about five years prior when I woke up one morning unable to shake off the chills from a nightmare. The horrible feeling of being chased and trapped by two men in an alley lingered on throughout the day.

That evening, with the nightmare still frighteningly fresh, I wrote about it. By the time I went to bed, I had the first few pages of what would become Broken Worlds.

The story took on its own life, but the seed that started it was the nightmare.

I have loved writing as far back as I can remember. All kinds of writing, poetry, short stories, even the dreaded essay assignment. So I’m extremely grateful that I get to make writing a part of my life.

I graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and then became a Chartered Accountant. I live in Ontario with my husband, who I’ve known since I was twelve, our two children, three dogs, two horses and a cat.
