Interview: Felicity Heaton (Hunger Book Tour) + giveaway

Today we have the queen of smexy; be it vampires, angels or dark fae. The Eighth book in her Vampires Realm series, Hunger, just released so we talk a bit about that. But then we get into the good stuff like biters, the full mouth approach and fruit salad. Good times people, good times...

Sharon: For those who aren’t familiar with the Vampires Realm series, can you tell us a little about it and what sets your vampires apart from others? Can they be read out of order? And did you bring one with you?

Felicity: It’s quite a dark vampire romance series, because none of them sparkle and all of them view humans as a food source and most of them view us as little more than that. They’re quite happy killing without a shred of remorse, and will do whatever it takes to live their lives. The whole series can be set apart from others out there by the fact there are actually seven different pure vampire bloodlines, all with a different eye colour when they’re flashing their fangs, and they live in a social structure with a lord or lady at the top of their chain of command. They rule different cities for the most part, although two do share the same city. They tend to want to fight each other, like keeping werewolves as slaves, although some families have dropped that nasty habit now, and view the vampire hunters as nothing more than pest control for the irritating weakling vampires, who are like a separate species. It’s a very complex series and world, so it’s almost impossible to boil down into a few sentences. Most of the books can be read out of order, with the exception of Masquerade. It’s really better if you know the series before reading that one as it features many characters from previous books. Hunger, the latest book in the series, definitely works as a standalone and is a fantastic introduction to the series. As for bringing my vampires here, they might eat us, but others will probably charm their way into our panties. I could call on Lord Hyperion. He leads the most powerful bloodline and he’s a real charmer! He’s also the most popular character in the series.
Sharon: Maybe we better wait till the end of the interview to bring him out…
Donna: No! I want him now!
Felicity: Oh go on… let him come out to play. He is the least likely to bite us, but the most likely to have us falling for his charms. Plus, you can pet his ravens. They’re very nice. But watch what you do with them around as Hyperion uses them as his eyes and ears. It’s a talent of his.

Donna: If you didn't write romance, what genre would be the runner up?
Felicity: Fantasy or science fiction. I love both of those genres too. I would probably choose to write dark fantasy stories.

Sharon: What is one thing the Brits do better than Americans and one thing Americans do better than Brits?
Felicity: Is it wrong to say spelling? I’m going to toss that one out there and duck and cover. We Brits spell things correctly, and we’re not afraid of ly adverbs either. Better to use them than write words that should be an ly adverb but without the ly. It drives me bonkers when people say things like – more important, rather than more importantly – or – It was real good, rather than it was really good. Just saying. Americans do food better than we do. Definitely! I’m addicted to all the cooking shows like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and Man Vs Food.
Sharon: lol, I’ll give you the ly thing. I don’t understand either. It doesn’t bother me to read ly words.
Donna: I take the ly's on a case-by-case basis. Some bug me really bad, others I don't even notice. If you like food shows, you should check out Top Chef.
Felicity: I will admit I’ve seen Top Chef. I’m such an addict. It’s so easy to have those shows on in the background and just let them run. My husband can’t watch them. He says they make him hungry.

Donna: Who's your favorite character to date?
Sharon: Thor! Oh, wait…you didn’t mean ‘date’ date did you? <G>
Donna: Yes. Of course I meant 'date' date. I'm going to hook you girls up!
Felicity: I’ll take a date with Thor… hmm. Yummy. My favourite character so far is Vail from the Eternal Mates series. I love my men messed up in a major way and somewhat broken, and this dark elf prince is very much broken. I got to fix him a little though in his upcoming book, Tempted by a Rogue Prince. I really loved him from the moment he walked into my head when I was planning the series, and writing him in the first two books was so much fun. It was great getting to write his romance though.

Sharon: When will readers get to read Tempted by a Rouge Prince?
FelicityTempted by a Rogue Prince will be out on August 9th. I’m working through it right now, editing away, and he’s still so dark and scrumptious. It’s really a book that requires reading the first two books in the series though, otherwise readers might feel a little lost as to who this rogue, dark, mysterious elf prince is. The first two books, Kissed by a Dark Prince and Claimed by a Demon King, really set the scene and backstory for this book, for both the hero, Vail, and the heroine, Rosalind.
Donna: What is your all time favorite quote?
Felicity: I have a favourite one from Dean Koontz about writing. It really speaks to me. I came across it years ago and it stayed with me because I always write books I want to read.
"If a writer isn't having fun when he's working, the stories that he produces are never going to be a pleasure to read. No one will buy them, and his public career, at least, will soon end."

For me, that is the secret to a successful, prolific career as a writer: Have fun, entertain yourself with your work, make yourself laugh and cry with your own stories, make yourself shiver in suspense along with your characters. If you can do that, then you will most likely find a large audience; but even if a large audience is never found, you'll have a happy life. I don't measure success by the number of copies sold but by the delight that I get from the process and the finished work.

Sharon: How many licks would it take for you to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
Felicity: To answer that, I would have to know what a tootsie pop is. Okay, Googled it and now I know what it is. I saw them making them once on a show. See, I’m really addicted to those cookery channels. I would suck that bad boy to death. I’m not big on licking. I much prefer the full mouth approach.

Sharon: *whispers* uh, Donna, can she say that or do we need to censor?
Donna: As long as we don't include the visuals, I think we can pull it off. Oh no, now everything sounds dirty.
Felicity: You’ve got such dirty minds! I wasn’t being dirty at all *pulls innocent face*

Donna: If you had to pick one for yourself, would it be an angel or a vampire?
Felicity: Vampire. I love my angels, but I’ve loved vampires since I was really young.

Donna: Does this relate back to you preferring the full mouth approach? Angels are probably more of the licking type.
Felicity: Yeah, I’m a sucker for the biters. Get it? Some of my angels are biters though. Veiron, being a Hell’s angel, has a nasty set of chompers when he loses his temper, and Asmodeus, the King of Demons, has fangs… and because of him, Nevar has fangs too now, since Asmodeus is his new master and has turned him dark. So I have biters in all my books.

Sharon: I'd be down with being bitten by these two!

Sharon: Who was your teen idol crush?
Felicity: Man, I can’t remember that far bac
k. That’s like asking me to remember to 20 years ago. Who was I crushing on when I was 16… Trent Reznor. I had a crush on him. So bad.

Donna: What was the craziest place or thing that gave you an inspiring idea?
Felicity: Trying to think! Heavens. I’m easily inspired so it’s completely impossible to remember what inspired me most of the time. I do want to write something involving a snowmobile since driving one this year. I was also really inspired by the aurora borealis when I went hunting for them this year… same holiday as the snowmobiling. I couldn’t help weaving it into Hunger.

Sharon: If you had to eat the same thing every meal for a whole week what would it be?
Felicity: Fruit salad. I could happily live on mixed fruit. Love the stuff.

Rapid Fire:

Donna: Carotid or Jugular?
Felicity: Jugular

Sharon: sexy teacher or sexy Dr.?
Felicity: Teacher

Donna: Spring or Fall?
Felicity: Fall… or autumn as we call it :)

Sharon: I agree with you on this one!
Felicity: Apparently, we Brits used to call it Fall, and then we started calling it autumn. Not sure why we changed it. We still say Spring Forward and Fall Back to remember which way the clocks go!

Sharon: picnic or restaurant?
Felicity: Picnic

Donna: Crucifix or Garlic?
Felicity: Crucifix, because crosses are pretty.

Sharon: but garlic bread is to die for!
Donna: Literally for her characters.
Felicity: Not all my vampires hate garlic. Actually, I’m not sure any do. Although the smell would probably put them off eating a garlic-ridden human. Even vampires don’t want garlic breath.

Sharon: math or science?
Felicity: Math

Donna: Red or Black?
Felicity: Black

Sharon: desert or tundra?
Felicity: Desert

Donna: Velvet or Satin?
Felicity: Velvet

Sharon: Coke or Pepsi? (and yes, you still have to choose even if you don’t drink them <G>)
Felicity: Coke

Sharon: *mumbles something about putting Felicity in a gummy bear suit and sending her to the dungeon*
Donna: Sharon, at some point you are going to have to accept that Coke is better!
Felicity: I’m big on the Coke Zero / Diet Coke flavours. Current crack is Coke Zero Cherry. OMG! It’s just like full-fat Cherry Coke. Diet Coke Cherry is black cherry here, and that is NOT the same as Cherry Coke. Can you tell I’m passionate about my cherry coke? (without the sugar, please, I’m sweet enough).

Betrayed by one of her own and turned into a vampire, hunter Eve is consumed by her hunger for vengeance and has spent five years surviving hell, driven to take the life of the man she once loved. But just as she is about to close in on the hunter-turned-vampire, an event is set in motion that threatens to see him slip beyond her grasp forever—the leader of her bloodline has sent an escort to bring her to the family’s mansion. To a nest of the very creatures she once hunted and loathes.

A vampire assassin hardened by centuries of service, Tor is a man of discipline and loyalty, never straying from his mission or the rules set out for him, and has purged all his weaknesses, including his emotions.

But the moment he meets the broken, fiery female he is to escort to Oslo, something dangerous awakens in him, something possessive and powerful, and when he is pulled into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the man who betrayed her, Tor discovers he will do anything to protect the woman slowly claiming his heart and give her the vengeance she desires—even break all the rules.

Can Eve embrace her new vampire nature in order to have her revenge and find a reason to live again in Tor? Can Tor and Eve stop the man who betrayed her and the deaths of thousands of innocents? Or will he succeed in creating a new army of hybrid vampires who will rise up against the purebloods?

  4. I don't think I really had a teen idol crush. I know my older sister really loved some stars, but I was more into real people. I never had a boy poster on my wall or anything. I was always wrapped up in a book, loving the lands and people I met there. Sad, isn't it?
