FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. (C) Fox

It was better than I expected after all the bad press, but it still missed the superhero blockbuster mark. I haven't read the comic book series so I don't know how close they kept to the original story line, but I preferred this version. This is an origin story of the team and that is pretty much it. In the previous movie (2005) a lot of screen time was given to the big battle with Dr. Doom. In the 2015 version, the battle took only a few minutes at the very end of the movie. This version also doesn't have the snarky dialogue or humorous touch the 2005 did. It is more of an action drama.

The area the 2015 film did do better than the previous, was explaining how they got their powers and showing how it affected them physically and emotionally. Dr. Doom was really a scary kind of villain, as he should be.

The movie is just the origin story and a jumping off point for a sequel. The last scene of the movie is the team coming up with the name Fantastic Four. I have a feeling the sequel will have the action packed superhero vs arch villain scenes we've come to expect in this movie genre.

Should you see it? If you are expecting an Avengers experience you will be disappointed. I think that might be the reason this film didn't do well. This is definitely rental worthy though. There are some really powerful scenes and if you don't have anything better to do, it isn't a terrible way to spend an afternoon when the temps outside are way out of your comfort zone.
