Book Review: Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs

Frost Burned, Patricia Briggs, urban fantasy, werewovles
Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, Book 7) by Patricia Briggs
Mercy Thompson’s life has undergone a seismic change. Becoming the mate of Adam Hauptman—the charismatic Alpha of the local werewolf pack—has made her a stepmother to his daughter Jesse, a relationship that brings moments of blissful normalcy to Mercy’s life. But on the edges of humanity, what passes for a minor mishap on an ordinary day can turn into so much more…

After an accident in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Mercy and Jesse can’t reach Adam—or anyone else in the pack for that matter. They’ve all been abducted.

Through their mating bond, all Mercy knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam’s disappearance may be related—and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from any ally she can get, no matter how unlikely.

There is a reason certain authors and books are on the Best Seller’s list. I haven’t read the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs, and yet I was able to jump right into book #7, Frost Burned, and felt right at home with the story and characters. This book, and Briggs's writing, is fine tuned for the masses. The book's story arc, which was very exciting and action packed, was brought to a satisfactory conclusion and the series story arc wasn't confusing to me because the back-story recapping was perfect.

I hesitate to talk about the plot too much because I am sure there are spoilers galore if you want to start with book one. However, if I can connect with these characters so quickly at book seven I can image how invested the fans are who have been reading the series since the beginning. Briggs doesn't hesitate from doing bad things to her characters and I like that. Her supernatural world is full of beings who might look human on the outside, but they are definitely not on the inside and she never lets you forget that. If you love alpha males then you definitely want to check out this series. Someone dies and even though I know nothing of this character other than their name, I could feel the pain that this death caused the other characters. I am a urban fantasy fan through and through and the Mercy Thompson series rings all my bells. There is so much more to come for this series with the vampires, werewolves and fae…

Favorite quote:

“I was going to fight vampires, and my name wasn’t Buffy – I was so screwed.” –Mercy

** All members of the flock should jump on the Mercy bandwagon because she wears a Lamb necklace! I kid you not! Page 262-

“I patted the lamb necklace around my neck to make sure it was still there. Objects of faith worked against vampires, and for me the lamb worked as well as a cross. Adam had given me a gold-with-emerald-eyes replacement for my sliver lamb because wearing silver is problematical when you are the mate of a werewolf.”

Welcome to our flock Mercy…

  7. I love this series, but this book is not my favourite. I want more Fae, but I expect to see that in the other series.

  10. I love this series and Patricia Briggs is a favorite author of mine. I like the bits of snarky humor she puts into her stories and the fact she sets them in eastern Washington state. Mercy is one of my favorite literary characters. She is a strong woman but has a soft side…plus she shifts into a coyote…how cool is that!?!

  11. Ms. Briggs has created a fascinating world populated with werewolves, vampires, witches, and other supernatural creatures, as well as giving us three-dimensional characters that I could imagine being friends with in real life. I tore through this book in a single day, and I can't wait to reread it at a slower pace. Fantastic addition to the Mercy Thompson series!
