Arts & Crafts with Authors: Felting Wolf with Donna Augustine + giveaway

Got a new fun feature for the flock Arts & Crafts with Authors! We invite authors to show us more of their creative side. UF/Dystopian author Donna Augustine showed me some of her felting and was floored. I asked if she could make a wolf. And why would I ask her to do that?
Because felting is done with sheep wool!!
We give you a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing... literally!

Needle Felting

by Donna Augustine
I first fell in love with felting when I saw a needle felted rabbit. It was the cutest thing I'd ever laid eyes on. It was also way out of my budget. So, convinced that I could do this, I read a few tutorials and plunged in. Actually, I've never met a craft I didn't like. I already paint, sculpt, knit, crochet, needlepoint, etc. If I named all my arts and crafts you wouldn't get through this paragraph. You get the point. My name is Donna and I have a crafting addiction.

Modern needle felting, also called soft sculpture, is the process of using a barbed needle to knit wool fibers together. Felting is a process that dates back to 6300 B.C., when people would take wool and wash it with soap and water to knit it together. If anyone has accidentally thrown a wool sweater in the wash (as I have) you know how much smaller and tighter it comes out. This is basically the same thing, just slower and more methodical. It's also a bit masochistic since you'll probably stab yourself at least once. I hope that doesn’t stop you from trying it!

you have a chance to win him at the end!!!
This is what we want to make! Our own little wolf shifter.

You will have to click the link to see the rest of the tutorial!

Ta da! How cool is that?

A big sheep thanks to Donna for sharing with us. If you have any questions about felting leave them in the comments and Donna will try to answer them.

Also be sure to check out The Alchemy Series. Shattered (Book 3) just released. And one winner will get signed copies of all three books and one winner will get the beautiful felted wolf!! (I can't tell you how freaking jealous I am of whoever wins this. I will have to hate you for at least a day <G>)

  5. What a brilliant idea for a blog feature! Kudos to I Smell Sheep for that! And holy cow, that is one amazing wolf --- Donna, you're really talented!

I like to sew, draw and paint, although it's a real challenge getting the time to do much when I'm writing. I'm several dozen projects behind....

If I were to win the wolf, I would call him Denali, after the Alaskan mountain and national park.

  6. I do arts and crafts. I paint pets on ornaments, art quilts, card making, origami, book crafts and much more. I love trying new things. If I were to win a wolf (which looks awesome!) I'd call him Lobo after a wolf in a book that I read and really enjoyed.

  22. I once was an avid baker, but I have health problems (a disease similar to MS) that's cause me to lose use of my hands, so that's not possible anymore. My sister was always very creative with arts and crafts (I used to say she was "crafty" - she never really got my pun). I do help my children with the occasional school project. Poor children. :)

  23. currently I don't do much in the way of arts and crafts, I just don't have time between reading, working my day job and working ebay at night. I used to scrapbook years ago

  31. I am a visual Artist and have been 20+ years. I show large oil paintings across the US, have clay sculpture in galleries on the West Coast and teach mix media classes locally… both of my daughters attend ACMA (The Arts & Communication Magnet Academy) where I am involved with the National Art Honor Society.. so the short answer is arts and crafts are in my blood and a daily part of my life!

  32. If I won the wolf I'd name him Kanoma which was the name of the husky dog who looked very wolf like. He was in our family for 17 years, we loved that dog so very much.
