In the new novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling “queen of paranormal romance,” (J.R. Ward) a wounded warrior and a woman on the run find salvation, passion and unimaginable danger in the ghostly darkness of the Carpathian Mountains…

He wasn’t civilized or tame. He had his own code and he lived by it.

Monk. Bounty hunter. Vampire slayer. Andre Boroi has spent centuries battling the undead, holding out against the dark with honor. But now, gravely wounded by master vampire Costin Popescu, Andre will be easy to track—his spilled blood marking the killing trail for Popescu and his hungry band of underlings. Andre’s only chance is to disappear into the gray mist of the Carpathians. To wait. To hope.

She had a healing touch and a scent that was his lifeblood.

In the mountains in search of a precious crystal, geologist Teagan Joanes suddenly finds herself hunted by those she once trusted. Then she comes across the warrior—wounded, wanting and irresistible. Andre has been craving her for an eternity: his lifemate. Her warmth envelops him. Her scent pulsates. And with every beat of her heart, Teagan surrenders to a passion she can’t possibly comprehend.

Now they are bound by destiny, but is it enough to keep them safe from a stalking, relentless darkness that threatens to swallow them alive?

Andre Boroi has spent centuries killing vampires and holding out hope that his lifemate is out there somewhere and that he'll find her in time before he chooses to meet the sun instead of turning into an evil vampire. He finds himself wounded really badly and retreats to the security of the caves in the hopes he will heal enough before the evil vampire and his minions find him and finish the job. What he doesn't expect is for his lifemate to walk right into the cave and try to save him. Teagan is hurt and running for her life after she trusted the wrong person. She came to the Carpathian Mountains to find something she hopes will heal her 'crazy' grandmother who believes in vampires.

Teagan finds her way into the same cave that Andre is healing in and after they are both healed they find the attraction towards one another is too much to resist. Of course Andre knows that Teagan is his lifemate and understands the attraction but she doesn't and can't understand why he wants to spend time with her and finds her attractive. Being an alpha Carpathian male, he does what most of them do. He binds her to him without explaining to her what he's doing and then goes one step further to keep them together, which really pisses her off. The one thing you shouldn't do to an independent female is take away her free will, her choice and he does that and doesn't tell her what it means until it's too late for her to do anything about it. That's probably the one thing that bothers me about these Carpathian men, they just do what they think is right and to hell with the consequences.

They spend a lot of time in the caves getting to know each other and we learn why Andre has the nick name, "Ghost". It's a real heartbreaking moment and it shows what a sad childhood he had. But Andre shares his nightmarish memory with her, something he's never done with anyone before and it brings them closer. I liked that the author let these two characters get to know each other a little before falling into each others arms and bed. Spending so much time together in the caves gave us several really hot sex scenes and if you ask me a good paranormal romance needs at least one good sex scene in the story and this one gave us several.

I liked this book and have been a huge fan of this series for many years. One thing that I look forward to with this series is seeing old characters make an appearance in subsequent books but that doesn't happen in this book. We do meet a new character named Fane and I hope that he gets a lifemate in some book down the road but I also hope we get to revisit some of the other characters in this series because I look forward to that after waiting so long for a new book to come out.

I give this book 4 sheep.

I write every day and have done so since I was old enough to pick up a pen. (I spent a lot of time getting in trouble at school for writing instead of doing the things I was supposed to do.) Once I create my characters, I try very hard to have them react to situations as they really would. Sometimes I have preconceived ideas of what I would like them to do, but they don't mind me, because it would be out of character for them. They take on a life of their own. Sometimes when I throw difficult situations at them in the hopes I'll get a certain reaction and they don't do what I want, I complain bitterly to my husband and he laughs at me. Still, it is important to me to have them be real, not perfect people, so they make mistakes we lesser mortals might make.

  1. Old characters are always fun to see get mixed in, especially when you like them. But new have to be given a go as well, to become old later on lol

  4. I enjoy this series. I do agree I get a little frustrated that the Carpathian men, do what they think is right and to hell with the consequences. I am glad to hear that the romance builds and they don't just fall into bed. Thank you for the review!

  5. I don't like it when men in books make decisions for the female thinking they know best or without talking with her about it. I mean why not explain first? It does sound like a good book besides that and I like the sound of how they are getting to know each other.

    1. Those carpathian men, that seems to be their thing. I'd never be able to deal with a man like that. No matter how hot he was. lol

  6. Whew, 26th book in the series! Glad you're still enjoying them, Mary. That alpha-grabsie stuff with the gals can get irritating, but it's good that the author let the relationship develop.
