Blood of the Wicked, a witchy good time!

Blood of the Wicked, by author Karina Cooper, is the debut book in her new series A Dark Mission. This book will suck you in, chew you up and then spit you out...utterly riveting!

Storyline:
When the world went straight to hell, humanity needed a scapegoat to judge, to blame . . . to burn.

As an independent witch living off the grid, Jessie Leigh has spent her life running, trying to blend in among the faceless drudges in the rebuilt city. She thought she was finally safe, but now she's been found in a New Seattle strip club—by a hard-eyed man on a mission to destroy her kind.

A soldier of the Holy Order, Silas Smith believes in the cause: trawling the fringes of society for the murderous witches who threaten what's left of the world. Forced into a twisting web of half-truths and lies, he has to stay close to the most sensuous and electrifying woman he has ever seen and manipulate her into leading him to the witch he has to kill: her brother. Silas doesn't know that Jessie's his enemy, only that he wants her, needs her, even as he lies to her . . . and must protect her until his final breath.

Silas is a Witch Hunter for the Holy Order, a hard-nose no nonsense solider with little patience and a LOT of pride. I didn't know if I was going to end up liking this guy with his stone cold killer attitude. The book starts out with Silas swearing like a one legged Pirate (Chips ahoy anyone?), but as the story unfolds he started to grow on me. After taking a 14 year break from the Order in New Seattle, Silas is tracked down by an old colleague to find a male witch, Caleb, who has been on a killing spree. Using Caleb's sister, Jessica, as bait Silas goes undercover to track down and stop the Witch. Translation: Kill some witches.

Jessica wants to find her brother at any cost, with or without the help of Silas. She has one goal in mind, save her only living family member and get the heck out of dodge. Jessica doesn't expect to actually start falling for the gruff, cold solider Silas as they set out their mission. But fall she does. The attraction between these two is crazy strong and so enjoyable to read. While I prefer getting freaky in a bed over a dirty run down old cathedral, we all get our kicks somehow. ;)

Wonderfully written and vividly descriptive, New Seattle was built after a devastating earthquake rocked the West Coast. As a native Californian I know for a fact we all think of the day when the "big one" is going to hit. But hey what ya gonna do right? Karina starts out a fascinating new series with some hard core witches. These are NOT the soft and frilly kind like Glinda, no these are the ones that will stab you in the neck and dance on your cold dead body! Don't let them get your blood or it's game over. Twists and turns, lies and secrets fill these pages packed with some snarky dialog like this gem:

The woman's almond eyes narrowed. "Look who's got balls."

"Yeah." Jessie's fists clenched hard at her side as raw violence swept through her. "I'm hoping we can get something done while we're waiting for your balls to drop."

Loved it! This is getting a MUST READ from me, book two Lure of the Wicked comes out June 28th so hop on book one just as fast as your hooves can take you.

  2. Yay! You're back! :)

If witches aren't really you're thing then yeah. You know me and vamps, so this was out of my norm. But if you can tell by this and other reviews...then go with your gut.

I am excited for book 2!

  3. For some reason, I just didn't connect with this one as much as I did the other two books. But I really loved Before the Witches --and Lure of the Wicked as well. It's a solid series and I'll defintely keep reading.

    Great quote!

  4. @Jen I can see that, maybe because he was kind of a gruff cold guy? I felt for him and really look forward to reading deeper into that backstory. Thanks for the comment!

  5. I'm so thrilled you liked it, Katie! I hope your readers get as much love out of it as you did.

Silas is definitely one of my favorite heroes, if only because he's got a lot on his shoulders, poor guy. I'm so glad you felt for him; our Silas needs that, don't you think?

...Jonas sheep? Do we have a new favorite friend? ;)
