Book Review: Primani by Laurie Olerich

Primani (Primani #1)
By: Laurie Olerich

Paperback, 434 pages
Published September 7th 2013

Mica Thomas is Sean O'Cahan's worst nightmare. Part angel, all Primani, he's a ruthless protector with unusual talents. Jaded by the weakness of humans, he takes a hands-off approach to his charges. His job's to protect her. That's all. But Mica's got other ideas. He's strong, but she's stronger. Will his one moment of weakness destroy them both?

The Primani series is an exciting urban fantasy romance that follows the tribulations and transformation of one young woman and the tight group of elite warriors charged with her journey to immortality. At times dark, at times light, full of twists, and steamy passion, the Primani series provides a new spin on an old concept. There’s a fine line between good and evil and no one is immune to temptation.

Mica is a fighter. After she’s left for dead by a psychotic ex, she vows to never be a victim again. Focused only on living life to the fullest, she’s not interested in true love--until Sean comes along. Tall, dark, and mysterious, he’s the man in her dreams. Suddenly true love doesn’t look so bad after all.

Sean is one of the best there is. A ruthless, powerful Primani, he’s assigned to guard more than just her body. There are plans for her. Plans that’ll change everything she believes if she lives long enough to learn the truth. Guarding one human shouldn’t be this complicated, but Mica makes it anything but easy.

As the clock ticks, Mica is drawn deeper into the dangerous Primani world until there’s no way out and she doesn't want to leave.

Mica is a teenage girl whose mother has passed away and so she now lives with her father and stepmother. Well, sorts. She lives in an apartment; I assume is connected to her father’s land, maybe even behind the house. She has her circle of friends she hangs around with. And she was almost left for dead by a psychotic ex-boyfriend who with a friend still tries to make her life miserable and maybe this time insure she dies. This puzzles me as why he hasn’t been kept longer in prison, or the court hasn’t set that he keep away from her. There are a few times I puzzled over the logics of things like that, but still the novel is good. She is rescued after being attacked by a boy from school, Mica's life changes with three rescuers. Mysterious, muscular, and good-looking saviors appear to be going to the high school, but she feels they are not teenagers. One in particular, Sean, attracts her. Despite him fighting the attraction back, it is inevitable both come together romantically, to the dismay of the other Primani. Soon after that her destiny grows closer as she develops abilities only the Primani have. Abilities she shouldn’t have a human. Mica learns that demonic evil stalks the earth and only the Promani stand between it and humankind.

Except for the few glitches, the novel is good. The author mixes the romance with special ops and the paranormal, making a suspenseful romantic thriller, with a battle of good versus evil. If paranormal romances and urban fantasies with angels and demons are your thing, than you will enjoy this book. Just don’t be surprised if you end up staying up most of the night, wanting to finish it.
